back in the day, I started a grow (it was in a legal place of course). I got lazy and never took them out of the pint jars. They grew and grew until they were just twisted monsters behind the glass of the jars. I popped the lids at one point and they kept growing and growing. I realize now that it's almost impossible to fuck up shrooms if they're given a good place to thrive. They are amazing in a botanical sense. I mean, really they're fucking weird. shit, water, rice flour, and vermiculite. how easy. 30 USD for about 6 months of fun

I've used and followed this guide with AMAZING success.
as far as $30 being enough to start up.. ur kidding yourself.
after you've purchased all ur supplies (jars, innoculation tools, ingredients, spores, autoclave, sterilizers and other nessesary equiptment like masks, gloves and a glove box) you've already topped over $150 (being able to find or make some of these can drastically reduce your prices..)
ended up selling my entire setup to a friend, tho all I'm really missing to have a full mico-grow room is an autoclave and some dextrose.. about $50 combined if you shop around.
I'm still looking for a decent supplier for spore syringes. maybe I'll set up shop over the summer.

I spent about 30-40 bucks, already had a pressure cooker. 10.00 for a spore syringe, vermiculite and rice flour were about 15 combined. jars were 12.00 at wally world. No gloves were used.. no box was used, I did not case the substrate, it was an in vitro grow. sterilize the jars packed with substrate, wash your hands, spray all surfaces with lysol before beginning. http://forums.mycotopia.net/attachments/off-site-links-downloads-pdfs/45831d1172166473-chronic-tek-pdf-chronic-tek.pdf this is the tek I've used. I did not remove the cakes to the quart jars in the instance that I posted above. however, better results when using the quart jars. I bought a pressure cooker for 40.00. so my TOTAL startup costs were less than 100 bucks. however I did not factor in the pressure cooker, my bad.

we used to have kits at the headshop around town, so i picked one up some years ago, it was a good go with the grow bags
but i really think the jars will work out better for you dude, at least, this is my experience
i think the jars retain heat a little bit better, therefore causing somewhat sped up growth
