"Tayside ‘awash’ with dangerous new drug
The streets of Dundee and Tayside are “awash” with a “dangerous” new drug that could be more addictive than cocaine, a leading drug treatment charity has claimed (writes Katie Smyth).
But police have been unable to properly crack down on the methyl methcathinone based drug — dubbed “bubbles” — because it is still technically legal.

According to Gareth Balmer, project manager at the Addaction Dundee branch, the new “legal high” is not controlled in any way.

He said, “Dundee and Tayside are awash with it at the minute, and we need to do something about it. This is not a drug to be taken lightly. It may have a cute name, but it’s very dangerous.

“We first started hearing of bubbles in August or September last year, and a lot was seized at Glastonbury last summer.

“It’s been prevalent in Dundee for the past eight or nine months.”

Part of the problem of getting tough on bubbles is that so far the police have been unable to trace its exact chemical make-up.

User reports suggest bubbles is a cocktail of MDMA, ecstasy and cocaine, but this has not been confirmed, or otherwise, by scientific testing.

There are thought to be three or four varieties, and Tayside Police is currently testing a batch seized last Friday night while they took Public Health Minister Shona Robison on patrol in the city centre.

A force spokeswoman said, “Just because it’s legal to possess doesn’t mean it’s safe.

“Most of the substances are illegal to sell, supply, or advertise for human consumption, under medicines legislation, because of their effects on the body. Legal highs can contain a range of potentially dangerous chemicals, and their chemical makeup changes all the time — so you can never be 100% certain what you have bought, and what the effects might be.

“The chemicals in legal highs have, in most cases, never before been used as drugs, so have had no tests performed on them to show they are safe.

“Nor do they have a long history of use, so health problems would not yet have become apparent.”

The drug is either swallowed or snorted, and has a similar effect to ecstasy — producing euphoria, alertness, talkativeness and feelings of empathy.

According to Addaction, users have reported rashes, numbness, headaches, amnesia, extreme bruising, palpitations, rapid breathing, heart pain, ulceration of the nose, throat and stomach, paranoia and aggression among the side effects.

Mr Balmer said, “Although some people are willing to take the risk, there have been virtually no toxicity tests done on bubbles, and we simply do not know what the risk is.

“If people are going to take it, we would advise them not to mix it with other substances, including alcohol.

“If you don’t feel any effect don’t continue, and don’t snort it, as evidence suggests bubbles can damage the nasal passages.”

He also warned that although the drug is technically legal, it could still land you in trouble.

“If you are stopped by the police with bubbles you will be arrested until they have tested it,” he said. “You may end up in Bell Street for the weekend while they confirm you are not in possession of something illegal.”"

I think the whole lot will go at once by the end of the year (in the UK). The only popular legals left will probably be kratom, and I think that will go sometime next year. The whole thing's on borrowed time. It's getting to where I'm now rather nervous about even buying anything online, to be honest. I'd advise only buying in small quantities from now on if anyone is planning to purchase especially mephedrone online because the police could even argue that someone could be ordering with intent to supply, indirectly endangering the public (even if it's just friends).

It all depends on how far they want to take this, but now that a major vendor has been raided and busted, it wouldn't surprise me if one or two other especially visible vendors went down the same way. I'd imagine that people just buying a gram or two should be fine but those who've ordered anything more than 5 grams could be considered to be ordering enough to have intent to supply, and thus be pursued as well if all the customer records were perused.

I doubt if they will go after customers but I really wouldn't put it past the police, especially for those making large bulk purchases (even though they may understandably want to be stocking up before the ban, it could still look like they want to resell on to others, etc.)

I agree 100% on the borrowed time thing, mona.

I think meph will get a bit longer than this year, but some time next its a goner i would think.

Another version of this story was in another local paper the next day, but not quite as high profile. Was a smaller story further inside.

But it was even MORE stupid (can you believe)

It didnt mention 4mmc and literally just said it was a legal high containing a mix of mdma and coke. Who writes these things?

With starting a new job recently ive met quite a few new people. And worringly a lot of them have mentioned bubbles or mephedrone to me in the last week...without me mentioning 1 thing. Pills are a thing of the past at the moment it seems.....hopefully thatll change soon with some better ones appearing apparently.

Better then MDMA, Coke, and Ecstacy pills? I doubt it. Sounds like a killer combination that can't be beat. /sarcasm

its not true, but people think it is. Its just mephedrone with some crap cutting shit.

if it was mdma it would last far longer, if it was coke then you snort it not eat it haha

crap reporters

i think it stems from when they initally arrived on the local scene. Folk were being told "its like a cross between pills and coke"

and somehow along the line (chinese whispers) its ended up BEING pills and coke. which it most def isnt..

omfg i HATE HATE HATE stories like that. you should call up the paper and have them fact-check the columnist. it's as though they pulled everything outta their ass.

you should write the columnist and demand a retraction. show all the hundreds of factual corrections that should've been made to their bias and inform them that their editor-in-chief has been CC'd about it!

if we keep letting the media set a bad image based on LIES we will lose the drug war! we can't just sit and laugh around. we are LOSING! if someone tells you your sibling is a serial killer would you laugh and let them keep saying that to everyone in your town AND have everyone BELIEVE it? NO! you ACT upon it!

Totally! What makes it even more ridiculous is they say it contains a mix of mdma, ecstasy and cocaine. I mean, I know 'ecstasy' rarely contains much mandy these days, but don't these people realise that ecstasy and mdma are supposed to be the same thing?! Noone needs this kind of mis-information!

I didnt realise mixing MDMA and coke made it legal, lucky the dealers don't know that or the old bill wont have a leg to stand on! :p

On a more serious note, the media needs educating, its getting to the point where they no longer report news, they just report the parts that are deemed interesting or that agree with local opinion! Hate the fear mongering media!!!

Where do these airhead jounalists come from? They need to get the facts straight before they (so call) inform the public. It seems to me they're just being out right malicious...

yea its getting proper big now.

Here you can get 5 meph caps for £20, but they only have 200mg at most in them. so its £20 a gram essentially.

I have seen pure crystal mephedrone being sold locally but it was £25 a g
